Floods & Stability

MERT Task 3.0 Fight Floods

In this module we will cover all facets of damage control for floods.

Training Element 3.1: Employ Flood Prevention Devices

Students will be able to identify hazards, learn how to apply leak stopping devices, operate salvage pumps and manage power isolations. They will practice flood prevention measures including erecting shoring and other leak stopping devices including the use of suitable materials that are available onboard.

PC 3.1.1: Apply Flood Prevention Measures

  • Identify hazards of onboard floods
  • Apply leak stopping devices
  • Identify and operate leak stopping devices and equipment
  • Identify and operate portable salvage pumps
  • Carry out correct Power Isolations

Training Element Assessment 3.1: Exercise MERT- ICULOUS 3.1

Training Element 3.2: Establish Flood Boundaries

In this Element students will learn how to set flood boundaries and confirm the actual extent of damage. They will practice escape procedures from a flooding compartment and what to do once clear of the compartment to limit the spread of flooding.

PC 3.2.1: Establish Flood Boundaries

  • Control Flood Boundaries
  • Apply escape procedures from flooding compartments
  • Apply techniques to limit the spread of flooding

Training Element Assessment 3.2: Exercise MERT– ICULOUS 3.2

Training Element 3.3: Apply Leak Stopping Procedures

Students will get practicable hands on training (simulated) relating to initial response and initial actions for a flood.  They will learn the importance of Power Isolation for a flood to ensure the team is safe while working in water.

PC 3.3.1: Apply Immediate Action Initial Response

  •  Act as a member of the Flood Teams
  • Demonstrate your Initial response action
  • Act as part of Initial attack Team
  • Carry out correct Power Isolations

Training Element Assessment 3.3: Exercise MERT- ICULOUS 3.3

PC 3.4.1: Apply Removal of Flood Water Procedures

  •  Employ ship fitted salvage pumps
  • Employ portable salvage pumps

PC 3.4.2: Demonstrate an Understanding of Fast and Slow Floods

  •  Identify hazards
  • Check correct Power Isolation
  • Confirm all other isolation are completed – refer to SOP
  • Confirm compartment clear of all personnel
  • Confirm that the compartment is closed down
  • Allow the compartment to Solid Flood
  • Consider Stability issues and apply counter measures as required

Training Element Assessment 3.4: Exercise MERT- ICULOUS 3.4

Training Element 3.5:  Apply Flood Containment

In this Element students will apply the principles of Flood Containment. They will practice effective initial response learn to recognise dangers and hazards and simulate controlling a flood to reduce the flow of water to a rate the ships salvage pumps can handle.

PC 3.5.1: Monitor Flood Boundaries

  •  Check area for Hazards to personnel conducting containment tasks
  • Complete a search the compartment boundaries for more damage.
  • Check and confirm the correct Power Isolation have been made
  • Check that First Response personnel are correctly dressed and have appropriate safety equipment

PC 3.5.2: Apply Post Flood Routines

  •  Establish a Shoring Watch
  • Fully Overhaul by removing all flotsam
  • Remove Water
  • Test for Toxic Gas
  • Recover the Compartment
  • Damage assessment – effects on ships capability
  • Report Damage
  • Work with other emergency agencies

PC 3.5.3: Demonstrate an Understanding of Fast and Slow Floods

  • Identify hazards
  • Confirm correct Power Isolation
  • Check all other necessary isolations are made
  • Clear a Compartment
  • Check the compartment is fully closed down
  • Allow the compartment to Solid Flood
  • Consider Stability issues and apply counter measures as required

Training Element Assessment 3.5: Exercise MERT- ICULOUS 3.5

Training Element 3.6: Apply Stability Counter Measures

In this Element students will learn the principles of stability and effective counter-measures. They will learn how to combat large areas of free surface water and deal with the hazards associated with ships instability.

PC 3.6.1: Apply Stability Counter Measures

  •  Assess/Consider Stability issues
  • Erect dwarf Bulkheads
  • Allow the compartment to Solid Flood
  • Plug the pump

Training Element Assessment 3.6: Exercise MERT- ICULOUS 3.6
